Partnership Facilitating Net Zero CO2 Emissions Flights for G7 Hiroshima Summit
TOKYO, Japan – INPEX CORPORATION (INPEX), Idemitsu Kosan Co.,Ltd. (Idemitsu) and All Nippon Airways Co., Ltd. (ANA) announced today they will jointly undertake the carbon neutralization of jet fuel across its entire supply chain for select flights during May 1~31, 2023, as the Group of Seven (G7) Hiroshima Summit takes place in Japan.
In this initiative, INPEX and Idemitsu will acquire carbon credits1 to neutralize 100 percent2 of the CO2 generated across the jet fuel supply chain from the production of crude oil to the operation of flights, whereupon Idemitsu will supply the carbon-neutralized jet fuel to ANA. This marks the first instance in Japan where an airline is supplied with jet fuel whose CO2 emissions are reduced to net zero across the entire supply chain.
The net zero CO2 emissions jet fuel is expected to power all scheduled ANA flights departing from and arriving at Hiroshima Airport between May 1 and May 31, 2023, in tribute to the G7 Hiroshima Summit scheduled to take place on May 19~21, 2023.
Carbon neutral jet fuel supply sequence
1. INPEX produces equity Murban crude oil in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE)
2. Idemitsu procures the Murban crude oil for jet fuel refinement at a self-operated refinery
3. INPEX and Idemitsu acquire carbon credits to neutralize 100 percent of the CO2 generated across the jet fuel supply chain. Idemitsu supplies the carbon-neutralized jet fuel to ANA
4. ANA to operate carbon neutral flights
The jet fuel deployed on the carbon neutral flights will be neutralized by the procurement of carbon credits certified by the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) as offsetting all the CO2 generated across the jet fuel supply chain. CORSIA was developed by the International Civil Aviation Organization3 (ICAO). Furthermore, the procedure and completion of the carbon neutralization of the jet fuel are third-party certified by SOCOTEC Certification Japan, which enhances the credibility of the operation.
INPEX, Idemitsu and ANA will continue to study opportunities towards building a carbon neutral society after the G7 Hiroshima Summit.

In its medium-term management plan (2023~2025), Idemitsu announced it will implement solutions in three domains of society by 2030 to become a main player in energy and carbon neutral solutions by 2050. In addition to carbon credits, Idemitsu will seek to build supply chains for energy solutions supporting carbon neutrality, including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), bio-blended fuel, hydrogen and ammonia.
The ANA Group has set a medium- to long-term environmental goal of achieving net zero CO2 emissions from aircraft operations by fiscal 2050. While we have various strategic approaches, including the improvement of flight operations and innovations in technology, the expanded use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), the Paris Agreement target to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C requires immediate action, and we are working on approaches that can be swiftly implemented. The airline will continue to pursue the decarbonization and sustainability of the aviation industry in collaboration with various stakeholders and contribute to the realization of a carbon-neutral society.
